Extended families are not a strange thing for Myanmar society. There is always one child or more at our home. It is most visible during summer time. Since I was about 6 or 7, I knew how to babysit. Besides, my parents are the ones who love to be a host for all of these children. Children from my generation and following generations has grown up and some of them has their own children now. Those children also came to our home and play.
My parents love to create the environment to be fun and child-friendly. My father used to make toys for us and he still love to do so for the children. He still loves to do pumping of the bikes and the inflatable pool.
My mother would use the garden watering pipe and creates a shower for the kids. She might sometime go inside the pool and play with them. Our generation could not give much time to the parents anymore as we have to struggle with our lives. But these children are the reasons that is making my parents laugh out loud.
As my parents grew older, they long for accompaniment of children more and more. Without them, they seem to be much more silence. I believe this is one of the essence of Asia. For an old couple, they want to hear all the sounds of the children; playing, crying, arguing, running etc. We call them the wind chimes of a home.
